KZMP 1540AM ESPN Deportes Announces
“Copa ESPN 2010”








Irving, TX – 1540AM KZMP ESPN Deportes announced that it will host its second annual youth soccer tournament -- “Copa ESPN 2010” -- April 23, 24, and 25th at McKinnish Soccer Complex in Carrollton, Texas.



Last year’s inaugural weekend event became Dallas-Ft Worth’s most talked about youth soccer tournament. This spring, the tournament will expand to three days, and once again feature the area’s best teams. The invitation-only “Copa ESPN 2010” will consist of 60 teams with more than 1000 players and five age categories (under eight, 10, 12, 14 and 16).



“Coming off last year’s success, we’re very excited to be able to grow ‘Copa ESPN’ in just its second year,” said Pete Dits, 1540AM VP/General Manager. “It’s a great way for ESPN Deportes to be an active contributor in our community.”



ESPN Deportes anchors Jorge Ramos, Hernan Pereyra and David Faitelson will MC the three-day event. They will be joined by Xavier Olalde, Carlos Nava and Luis Fernando Perez during live broadcasts from the McKinnish Soccer Complex.

Last year the tournament was very decent considering it was their first one, I hear its attracting a lot more teams this time. Its a nice warmup for State Cup.

If you have for example a U11 team then you would have to play in the U12 category. As long as players do not pass the age limit, teams/players can play up.

There are just too many tournaments competing for teams. Until you have established yourself as a popular/well-known tournament, you will do good to fill up your brackets even when offering every other year groups.

So far, haven't been too impressed with this tournament. You guys need to use Got Soccer and get the schedules out earlier than you did. Scheduling very poor! Our team is going from a 9 pm game to an 8 am game the following day. And can't we just use normal field numbers?

Can't agree more. Appears there was little thought put into the scheduled game times for the younger teams when they have 9pm & 10pm game times. The older age groups are playing in the earlier time slots. ??????

It's a young event with quirks to work out, no doubt.
- At the seeding meeting, they announced the Wednesday schedule release at that some games could play at 11:00pm(!). Limited space + number of teams + coaching conflicts makes scheduling difficult.
- To the field naming - McInnish uses letters and it looks like ESPN sold sponsorships of the fields to help keep registration costs down.

Yeah, there are sponsors for each field. McInish only has 4 soccer fields, last year they had big name signs next to each field, easy to find.

It is understandable that there is a tight window but for 10 year olds to have an 11pm match is pretty tough.

Apparently, at the pre-tournament meeting last Thursday the coaches in attendance didn't like the preliminary mini games with 20 minute halves. They wanted to play the full 25's. It was made known that doing so would push games late into the night. The coaches still wanted to play full games.

Now you have U8 & U10 teams playing 10 or 11 at night with 8 AM games the next day. Evil or Very Mad

I am surprised though that they didn't schedule the older brackets later given the desire to have full half's. It is what it is though and I don't expect a change.

it appears that the U-14 group only has and no D1 teams....possibly 1 D2 team and 2 from D3.......where are the other teams from ?
