U12 Competitive= 11v11, 30-minute halves, $550

Last year, this tournament had 364 teams and we look forward to having even more teams this year.

Please consider bringing un-wrapped toys (no realistic-looking weapons and no food) to tournament check-in or to tournament headquarters at the following playing locations during tournament play:

8 team gold bracket and no semis is pretty crappy

The kids always want to play no matter the cold. I have my own outdoor championship game on Sunday. Here is hoping that my defense gives me a lot of work so I do not freeze watching the game.

All 8 teams in the U12 Gold flight are in Classic. I think. But sure, if you aren't in CL then you can't be cool enough to expect a semifinal.

My guess was gonna be no semi because 400 teams into X number of fields equals beat head against wall, throw up hands, and cut out some # of games to make it all work out. Then count dolla bills. But I don't give these things enough thought.

I think you hit the answer on the head with your last statement. throw out some semis and keep the money that you were supposed to pay the refs for profit.

I doubt it is too nefarious.  You take whatever teams apply and pay.  Then you start trying to schedule things.  Including getting more fields and refs, which are finite resources.   And in the end, you find out the logistics don't work unless you limit the average number of games per team.  

The alternative is turning folks away.   Which might get you more unhappy folks then no semifinal.  I mean, not turning folks away also has a "making bank" element to it as well, but I doubt TO is sitting around his mansion burning $100s to light cigars when he posts the final schedules.  

All just opinion, but then I always look for the good in people (oftentimes fail to find it)

This division was split based on the skill level of the teams registered.  If two of the Silver teams wanted to play Gold, we would have had a Gold division of 10 and had semi-finals.


Many factors go into why we do not have semi-finals for divisions of 8.   Here are some of them...  

1. We offer full-length games in preliminary rounds, unlike other tournaments.  Make every minute and every goal count.  If these were mini-games in preliminary rounds, I would agree with having semi-finals.

2.  Not all teams play Friday night games, so they have to play 3 games Saturday and 2 Sunday or 2 Saturday and 3 Sunday.  5 full-length games in 36 hours produces tired players, which leads to injuries and sloppy play in the Finals.   A handful of teams in different age groups have their classic league rainout game rescheduled to the weekend of this tournament.  Semi-finals would give them 6 games in the weekend.

3. Semi-Finals mean later Finals.  The travelling teams need to get home, since the players have school on Monday.  I am getting hammered by some travelling teams with 7pm Finals on Sunday, who remind me that they have a 3 hour (or more) drive home afterwards.

4. If we have semi-finals for for one division, we have to do it for all 17 of the divisions of 8 teams, and there just aren't enough fields available on Sunday for that many additional semi-finals.


In other divisions, splitting one big division into two smaller divisions costs us more money.  Trophies for a second division costs us more than the referee fees we save by not having semi-finals.  After all I hear and read about we shouldn't give kids trophies and medals just for showing up, having half the teams in a division advance to semi-finals in a competitive tournament seems to be contradictory.


I enjoy these kinds of discussions and wish this was a 5-day tournament to play as many games as possible and take as many teams as possible, although 429 is my biggest tournament to have as a TD.  I am impressed that people want to be outside in the cold for 5 games, this weekend.  I wish my field marshalls were that excited about it.

I for one was in the cold for 3 games Saturday and 2 on Sunday....then drove 2hrs home...during finals it started snowing at the end and the kids loved it! Traveling 2hrs away to play...it's nice to know your playing full length games in bracket play.
I thought you did an outstanding job....refs were fair and consistent, games were all on time and trophies for the kids were a lot larger than some of the tournaments we've played like Grapevine, Hurst etc where the kids get a participation trophy for being a finalist...and cost less than some of those tournaments. Plus, as Dom said....almost all tournaments now days only offer 25 min halves for bracket play....the extra 10 mins seems small, but over the course of bracket play that's an extra 30 minutes of play time....which is a half for a semi final match.
