Dallas Texans Resident Program Empty Dallas Texans Resident Program

Post by TexasSoccer02 8/25/2011, 2:36 am

I am interested in putting my kid in the program. Does anyone have a kid in the program? Are there many 02 kids?
Has anyone heard anything?
Are the kids in the program getting that much better? Or is it just more touches on the ball. I know their is a Solar 02 kid in the program
I just want to get more information other than the texans website. I want some non biased opinions.
Thanks

The program is based on IMG format but you can't compare the two.

Because the USSF uses IMG for its U17 residency. It draws the top players from all over the US (and a few that hold dual passports). The DTR program is very limited to a local level.

Excellent point, I see now why I have heard that the Dallas Texans are wanting to build dorms and have a place for "soccer students" to stay. Makes sense, I guess it would take a lot to match what IMG has going.

It will take in the neighborhood of 50G per student per year to match IMG affraid

Thanks for everyone's input. I am happy with solar and I don't want to switch. I heard FC Dallas has a similar program for older kids

Trying to compare the Texans program to IMG is not apples to apples... IMG has been around for a very long time and they provide more services outside of soccer.

This is the first year of the program give it sometime to find its legs. My son is in the program and he loves it. He enjoys the coach, "Nipper" and the number of touches he gets on the ball.

Only negative is the expense... but I rather spend my money on this program then spending 3k for two practices a week. With this program my son gets about 16 hrs of practice time in 4 days, Friday they do class room session and light practice, for approx the same cost.

Actually, unless your son is not on a team or is receiving some sort of scholarship, then you are paying both - the $3900 for the Residency program + $2800 for your club dues.

You are correct though, one truly is a bargain compared to the other.

My son does not play for the Texans so I am not paying the $3k in dues. The team he plays for is not even half of that. If I had to pay an additional $3k he more than likely would not play on a club team... I would just pay for the residency part of it until he was eligible for Academy

I have a bb in the program as well and so far he loves it. I will say that "Nipper" was a good choice. Maybe the British accent helps motivate the boys. So far I'm impressed with the general soccer knowledge that my bb has picked up. His soccer IQ and touch have gotten much better in the first month which seems to be the general focus right now. First touch is everything. All I can say for now is that they seem to be headed in the right direction and none of my BB's play for the Texans.

We are however a little concerned about all the training right now. By the time the bb gets to club training after DTRP training for 4 hours his legs are spent and then by the time he get home he's wiped out. We'll just have to wait and see on that one.

Having lived down the road from IMG this is definitely a much cheaper option. I knew folks paying upwards of $40k per year. Of course the select few weren’t paying at all but that’s how it is with everything.

Today is just the 4th day of school so it is hard to determine academics at this point. Hit me up in a couple of weeks and we will know more

Web-site says it is maxed out now and that they are considering adding a waiting list for next year. Google Dallas Texans and you will see.

If I had a younger kid and the location logistics worked. I'd consider this as it's a cheap alternative to after school supervision.

The main downside is, given the ages discussed, is that it's force-feeding a single sport and pretty much single-threading your kid's immediate future. As is evidenced every day, there are countless U11+ kids that are on the road to being out of soccer despite their interest/prowess at younger years.

To compare it to IMG is like comparing a lemonade stand to Sonic. It's a start, but one has millions of dollars behind it and is globally branded with a better reputation. The MLS teams have these resident academies and I'd think have a better path to success with their sponsorship/backing than Texans (with Nike/ManU sponsorship), but HN always seems to find a way, I'm certain he's not losing money on this endeavor.

I think the education component is the real question here. I would be interested to hear the feedback on that in a few weeks/months.

I also don't get the schedule they posted. Why don't they break the day up better by having soccer before school. By doing it all after lunch it seems like a recipe for puking on the practice field.

There's actually a club in Plano that offers practice five days per week plus Sunday's (optional) at the regular $2300 price per year. The club has only been around for a couple years, but is well on its way setting the standard...

See... that is the problem. Until the US stops caring about education and more on the game, the rest of the world will always be better.

My son is a 98 and absolutely loves the program. I have noticed in the past three weeks a huge improvement not in just his confidence, but also his creativity & touch. I may have had some doubts before my son started, but now I know that my son and I made the right decision. Coach Thornber is an amazing coach, with credentials to match. The boys have been training Mon-Fri for the last three weeks and never once complained about being tired or burned out. First week of school at Quest (rated exemplary by TEA) has gone great and he is looking forward to a strong year not only in soccer alone but also in school...

I don't completely understand how the school works. Do they have the classes at the Ross Stewart building or have school in a real school then drive to Ross Stewart for soccer practice? Can somone break it down a bit more?
