03 coach teaching possession style
Who are the good 03 boys coaches that teach a possession style of soccer emphasizing ball control, and many short passes, as opposed to long airballs?

You may be correct. Most coaches say it, but I don't see it.

Re: 03 coach teaching possession style
the problem is that you need your STRONG technical play from the players in defensive positions. my experience has been that most parents are unreasonable in their expectations of what a coach can do with the talent on the team. even if you get a strong "eleven" players. mix in the weaker players and it's almost impossible. i have always excepted responsibility for my son's time with the ball. it's his passion but as a parent we have to know whats best. i have found that time alone with the ball is the most important training available. he has recently joined an elite team, without having had that possession style coaching and fits in like a glove. if you dd or bb can receive a ball with great first touch and dribble in traffic, the possession style play will materialize later when he/she s on an elite team.

can he run like the wind and smash 50yd field goals then he must now be on a texans team and when you say elite you probably reffering to an academy team am i correct? or at least close? you being from midland have alot to learn bro and you will, hey were you not the one poster on here yelling about how your apl team should be in d1 because you got lucky and beat one team but yet could not beat a d3 team or something? sounds like you got the ol' "texans pep talk" did he sale you a new car also?soccerdadrandy wrote:the problem is that you need your STRONG technical play from the players in defensive positions. my experience has been that most parents are unreasonable in their expectations of what a coach can do with the talent on the team. even if you get a strong "eleven" players. mix in the weaker players and it's almost impossible. i have always excepted responsibility for my son's time with the ball. it's his passion but as a parent we have to know whats best. i have found that time alone with the ball is the most important training available. he has recently joined an elite team, without having had that possession style coaching and fits in like a glove. if you dd or bb can receive a ball with great first touch and dribble in traffic, the possession style play will materialize later when he/she s on an elite team.

As Mike Tyson says, everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.
I think most would like to play possession soccer. Some are definitely trying to do it in the games, but some are clearly not. The first descriptors that come to mind for a lot of teams are "aggressive" or "athletic". BB's team tries to keep the ball, and that is really the only thing they ever practice. Sometimes it works well, sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes they lose their minds and it looks like a circus. But they seem to be trying. All you have to do is go to 02/03 ODP and you will see that there are a lot of ostensibly skilled kids who are learning completely different viewpoints on the value of keeping possession of the ball.
If I had to pick one team that we have played that always tried to keep the ball I would go with Ayses Olali. Credit to them, because the coach is still applauding the ideas when the execution was failing. Now I sound like that '94 guy.

he runs rather slow and does not have a very powerful leg. he can, however dribble in a crowd, make timely passes. you are close but i've had a chance to "buy that car" for the last 4 years and declined. the texans and fcd are here as well. not sure which d3 team i may have been talking about. his old apl team blasted the d3 oo boys storm 7-2 by no means was i trying to over represent the level of play on an academy team by using the word elite. these are "dallas" terms AS I AM LEARNING

Re: 03 coach teaching possession style
There are a ton of coaches that teach possession, and for the most part the young men of this area execute very well for their age... However, playing the possession game too early is hurting the individual development of players ball skills due to the pass 1st mentality... I coach my boys to play possession, as well as take advantage of the trap (through balls)... I want them to dribble to set up the pass, and it is important for them to have confidence with the ball at their feet in any situation... Speed kills, but speed and agility with the ball is a skill that is not being pushed as much these days... We pass, pass, pass, and individual ball skills drop off a bit over time... It is all about the "W" in Classic, which makes it hard for us coaches to develop player skills and allow the players to test those skills in games without being lynched by parents who live vicariously through their kids... It is an honor to just be in the league, and the teams who have made it there must be doing something right... To answer your question, just about every team teaches the possession style...
The real question is: Should we? There are many out there who feel that the local players have a mans understanding of the game, but have less individual talent than our competition south of the border and overseas... Balance in training is the key, and allowing the KIDS to play the game and be creative will keep them interested in this beautiful game for a very long time... I like to win, but want my boys to enjoy the game and play for fun... They will have a job when they grow up...

Re: 03 coach teaching possession style
To answer your question from the teams I have faced lately, I liked what Dominick Shell and Dean Robertson were doing with their possession game. .... Its funny, I teach possession, but, I have a couple greyhounds that know they can blow by a lot of kids and a couple mids know their attackers are greyhounds... it turns into way too many offsides right now, and their game morphs into something different than what I am trying to teach. Always something to work on....
