8-5A Standings
Down to three games left, and the standings look like this:
Team Record Points Left to play
Marcus 6-1-4 (16) @ Allen, Lewisville, @Hebron
FM 5-2-4 (14) Plano E, @ Plano W, Allen
Plano 5-2-4 (14) Lewisville, @ Plano E, Plano W
Allen 5-2-4 (14) Marcus, Hebron, @ FM
Hebron 5-3-3 (13) Plano W, @ Allen, Marcus
Marcus controls its own destiny due to their latest tie vs. Plano. If they win out they win District, but if they slip up in any of the last three games they open the door to everyone else. Plano looks to have the easiest schedule as they are finished with the other top teams and should win out to keep the pressure on Marcus to be perfect. Both Allen and Hebron have key games left, and the Friday game against each other may very well determine who gets fourth place.

Re: 8-5A Standings
Wow, huge results from last night's games that has turned 8-5A on its ear. Marcus lost to Allen 2-1, which combined with Plano's 2-1 win over Lewisville makes it a three-way tie for first place between Plano, Allen and Marcus at 16 points. Hebron knocked off Plano West 2-0, moving them up to fourth, but only one point out of first at 15 points. And the big loser was Flower Mound, who surprisingly dropped a 3-2 decision to Plano East. That leaves Flower Mound on the outside looking in at 14 points with two games remaining.
On Friday, Allen could clinch a playoff berth and deal a significant blow to Hebron's chances as the two meet head-to-head at Hebron. Their first meeting ended in a 2-2 tie. Plano has a rematch with Plano East, a team they handled easily 3-1 in their first meeting. But after East's upset of Flower Mound last night, this game may be a little more difficult for Plano than the first one. Marcus gets Lewisville at home and Flower Mound plays at Plano West.
If chalk holds, on Friday there will still be a three-way tie for first with Plano, Allen and Marcus at 18 points, Flower Mound in fourth at 16, and Hebron in fifth at 15 with one game left to play. But as we have seen, chalk is easily washed away with one mistake or one bad game. Should be an interesting fight to the finish in 8-5A!

Re: 8-5A Standings
So HS soccer uses 2 pts for win and 1 pt for tie in the standings? Lots of untraditional random rules in HS soccer (this, dribble-ups, yellow card rules, etc.).

The scoring isn't random, it is the same scoring used by the NHL, which makes perfect sense.

...except this isn't hockey, it is soccer, and in soccer the standard is 3 pts for win and 1 pt for tie. Although with dribble-ups to decide games and refs not calling much it tends to look more like hockey in HS so maybe it does make sense.

Re: 8-5A Standings
I was surprised to hear some districts do not end district play in ties, and they use HS shootouts to determine a winner for every game, which I thought was odd.

Why would a tie be odd?......soccer is always played to a draw unless it is a tourney (knock-out rounds) or playoffs......

Re: 8-5A Standings
I was surprised to hear some districts use HS shootouts. Soccer games ALWAYS use PK's to determine wins. That is unless they let the game end in a tie.
Just having some fun.
Heard that next year the dibble-ups are gone and they move to straight PK's.

Re: 8-5A Standings
not sure their thoughts behind supporting the "dribble-up", but we first saw it in middle school....Also not sure why UIL gives 1 point for a draw, but some districts refuse to end matches in a tie?.......

Re: 8-5A Standings
Yeah, it was odd when in re-districting two years ago we were moved into a district that ended games in dribble ups. We were used to the traditional tie. However, it gives the teams lots of opportunities to work on them prior to going into the playoffs.

Re: 8-5A Standings
Big night in 8-5A. Plano plays Plano West and should clinch first place in the district with a win, since they are 1-0-1 against both Allen and Marcus should they end up tied in any way (heads-up or three-way).
Marcus playes a Hebron team that needs a win (and a loss by Flower Mound to Allen) to sneak into the playoffs. Hebron will come out with guns blazing, and Marcus will not have a cake-walk in this one.
The real key is the Flower Mound/Allen game. Flower Mound has to win to be assured of a playoff berth, but they could lose and still make it if cross-town rival Marcus handles Hebron. The interesting twist is that if Flower Mound wins, they move up to 18 points and into a tie with Allen. But Flower Mound would own the head-to-head tiebreaker over Allen and would end up as the third seed. That would send Allen to a first-round playoff matchup with the powerful Coppell. Neither team wants to see that happen, so both teams will be fighting for their lives.
Delicious!

My pick is for Flower Mound to take that spot and face Coppell.

Don't know...that's the only score not posted at Dallasnews.com. Not surprisingly Plano beat Plano West 3-0, and Hebron scored in the first minute and extended the lead after halftime in a 3-0 win over Marcus. Can't wait to hear what happened in Allen vs. FM. Post it if ya got it.

A previous post indicated the tiebreakers are head-to-head, then goal differential (max of 3 per game). Hebron and FM beat each other once, so if goal differential is the next tiebreaker I count Hebron at +9 in district play and FM at +7. That would point to Hebron getting the fourth seed based on the second tiebreaker. I'd be surprised if they hold an actual tiebreaking game, but this is my first year with a kid in high school so I'm not familiar with their procedures.

tie-breakers are only used for seeding purposes.....teams that finish with the same records share the spot...so yes a tie-breaker game will be held on Friday

Current 8-5A Standings
Congrats to Allen for going from a bubble team a few weeks ago to the district runner-up. After more craziness in 8-5A last night, here are the regular season final standings with points for the top 5. Shown as W-L-T with 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie.
Plano 8-2-4 with 20 points
Allen 7-2-5 with 19 points
Marcus 7-3-4 with 18 points
Flo Mo 6-3-5 with 17 points
Hebron 7-4-3 with 17 points
Only 3 points seperate the top 5 teams!!
As CH1 said, there is a play-in Friday with Flo Mo vs Hebron.
