94 Class In College Soccer Updates - Page 7 Empty Re: 94 Class In College Soccer Updates

Post by Soccernovice 7/29/2013, 8:08 pm

I will keep this updated until we have an accurate and complete record of how the 94 boys did in college soccer since it is valuable to parents who have club or DA players who want to play college soccer. Right now you could probably say roughly 90 - 94's made a verbal commitment to a college to play soccer and most went on to that college and joined the team. One lesson from the 94 class is that Classic League players did make good college level DI, DII, and DIII players gaining significant playing time and some conference rewards as freshmen players. Another lesson learned was there are a very large number of schools with soccer programs including strong academic schools. Not all of the NCAA DI players recruited from the 94 class were from the USSF DA. A large majority are but there are some parents who may find club soccer along with High School soccer the best fit for their son's needs. Most Classic League players ended up in Division II, III, NAIA or Junior College teams. It is also surprising to see where the 94 class scattered I am sure I am still missing over 10 players. Most of the players that committed did attend those schools and play for their teams. There was a drop off between making a verbal commitment and actually joining the team. There was another portion that did not get any playing minutes on the field as freshmen from USSF DA and Classic League players. This may or may not be an issue for those players. Also, given the number of 94's playing college soccer there must be several hundred north texas players actively playing in college right now or joining with the 95 class. This is actually higher than some of the posters on txsoccer had thought or speculated in the past. This information should help parents and players in their college search for academic and soccer fits and this post is loaded with good tips for college recruiting. Hope that helps and yes I will update when I learn about additional players. There are different showcases for USSF DA and Classic League players. The key is to go to the showcases where there will be coaches from schools your players ability and academics are a good fit for and network with those coaches get them to watch your interested player. The FC Dallas Showcase, Texas Blue Chip Showcase in Houston, CASL Showcase in North Carolina, Disney Showcase, Adidias Showcase and several others in the east and west have a lot of college coaches in attendance. Key is to pick showcases that fit the profile of your players (ability, academics, and geographical interests).

As a parent of a bb just entering HS, I find your information very helpful. There are a number of us who have yet to go down the road of college recruiting and how to best get our bb's in front of college coaches. The fact that many of the CL players are getting just as many offers or opportunities as DA players is good to know. There are many posters on this website that think they have to get their bb into PA or DA, but your list of what teams these 94's are from and where they got opportunities at the college level leads me to believe you are fine going either path. Thanks

That is very true back when we were 94's still playing we heard the same: nobody in classic could get an athletic scholarship to a DI program, very few if any classic league players could ever make a USSF DA team, etc. etc.  That smack talk from some of those parents along with bashing of smaller clubs with good intentions makes it great to pull together some facts for parents to see.  There are many good choices out for your son besides USSF DA teams.  Key is finding a very good coach and a great group of kids and parents.  That being said, I do believe there are great kids and parents in USSF DA programs.  I am very impressed with the maturity and work ethic of many of those players and what some of they have accomplished.  It is definitely a great path for very serious and gifted players.  My son was very lucky to play for a very good coach in a smaller club with a great style of play.  All of our players were happy with their choice of staying with club soccer and getting to play High School soccer.

(UPDATED) The 1994 (2012/2013) graduating class was very talented bunch of players and sent over 100 players into college soccer. Some of the players got freshmen of the year honors in their college conference. Two play for the U20 National Team. One has been signed by FC Dallas as a professional in the MLS after a stellar year as a freshmen at the University of North Carolina. Some started and played every game. Most are returning as Sophomores to college soccer and a few transferred but will continue to play men's soccer. There are a few who I am not sure about so maybe someone knows if they are continuing with men's soccer or not as Sophomores. It is great to see that these players are doing well in school getting an education and getting to continue to play soccer in college on a varsity team. I am still adding updates not complete.

94 Class In College Soccer Updates - Page 7 Empty Re: 94 Class In College Soccer Updates

Post by Soccernovice 7/30/2013, 11:56 pm

I did an analysis of how many 94 players from USSF DA and Club teams actually got playing time as a freshmen on their men's soccer teams.  I only evaluated NCAA DI, DII and DIII players and did not evaluate NAIA, Junior College, or Christian College player statistics.

PLAYED AS A FRESHMEN ON THEIR COLLEGE MEN'S SOCCER TEAM

NCAA DI     ---        NCAA DII   ---         NCAA DIII
USSF DA                  23    ---                   8              ---          1           Total 32 players
Club                              4         ---             10        ---              12           Total 26 players

TOTAL FRESHMEN COLLEGE SOCCER COMMITMENTS 2012

---            NCAA DI     ---      NCAA DII     ---       NCAA DIII
USSF DA    ---               34        ---             8              ---          1           Total 43 players
Club          ---                 8        ---            14                 ---     16           Total 38 players

Looking at the above data roughly 70% of USSF DA players who signed with NCAA DI programs played as a freshmen.  For club players, that number was 50% of the players.  For DII and DIII all USSF DA players went on the play as freshmen.  For club, in DII roughly 70% played as freshmen players and in DII 75% played their freshmen year.

There is a much bigger population of club players to USSF DA players that graduated.  Still I think these statistics are surprising given a lot of the banter that goes around on club, small clubs and USSF DA programs. We are blessed in North Texas to have some very strong teams in USSF DA and club soccer and some strong smaller clubs.  The 94's had almost as many players from club go on play as a freshmen in college soccer as the USSF DA teams just less at the DI level which is expected.  The 94 USSF DA class was very strong so this may be the high water mark for USSF DA placing players who played as freshmen in college.  Will be interesting to see how the 95's do this year as freshmen in college soccer.

There were 27 USSF DA and club players out of the entire North Texas 2012 graduate pool that played college DI soccer their freshmen year (played = got minutes on the field as a freshmen player).

Anyone have a handy list of 95 commitments? I've poked around some and only found Andromeda USSF has theirs posted. Haven't checked Classic League teams yet.

One thing to watch out for on team's reporting college commitments is make sure they are making a verbal commitment or signed a National Letter of Intent to play college soccer. Sometimes the web sites list the players who are going to college not necessarily going to play varsity college soccer.

Official verbal commitments and/or NLI signed first week of February their senior year. Usually school provides athletic offer package if applicable and it is agreed to before player signs NLI (where applicable in DI and DII programs). Players typically have finalized their final aid packages before they make a commitment and have made their academic choices. Signing a NLI is irrevocable from the standpoint a player would have to sit out a year of college soccer if they change their mind. I found the USSF DA players were much further along than the club players in finalizing their decisions by February. Our club had players finalizing their decisions into March and April with one in June after the Youth Region III Championship. A DI coach saw him play and actively recruited him at that time he was still not committed. Every other player was commitment by June after their senior year that was going to play college soccer.

Soccernovice -

In your experience, any idea if colleges typically recruit/commit certain positions earlier than others? I'm aware of several 2014 graduating DA players that have verbally commited already. Seems most of them are offensive. None are goalkeepers. Maybe they start at the front and work back?

94 Class In College Soccer Updates - Page 7 Empty Re: 94 Class In College Soccer Updates

Post by Soccernovice 8/1/2013, 4:12 pm

I believe some of the USSF DA and club goalkeepers that are playing college soccer committed later in Spring for the 94's.  One was due to coaching changes at their #1 DI school choice.  I personally met with over 200 college coaches face to face at college showcases they are always looking for a standout player at any position especially top ranked national players on lists.  Then they are looking at who is being actively recruited by their peers and try to out bid their peers on highly recruited talent.  Then after first week of February, they chase who is left with some having rosters locked down and will only pick up a very special player they discover from that point forward.

DII and DIII schools are then chasing after all the others that are not highly recruited by the DI schools and lower ranked DI schools are also trying to find strong talent that fits their needs that are still available.

Each program has specific needs that must fill that vary school to school. That is the hard part of the process, there has to be a match between college program needs and your players talent, academic ability, and intangibles.
