Be one of the best players on the middle ranked team or start at the middle on the best team?
Both teams play in the highest competitive league for the age group.

Interested to hear experiences from those who have been in this situation?

Start at the middle of the best team if at an older age group or be the best player on a middle ranked team if lacks confidence or is a younger player (as long as he is not the fastest or biggest player and that is the only reason for being the best player on the team. In that case I would urge him to work very hard on technique, he will need it later on).

the key is whether or not BB will PLAY. sitting the bench and watching others play is no way to live out your youth.

Best team not top criteria for me. Getting substantial playing time against the highest level of competition that is appropriate for my son. Our boys are not getting paid to play this beautiful game, we are paying to play - they need to play. I have seen too many boys lose their passion because they are not playing enough.

Depends on the age group. The difference between a top team and a middle team may not be as big as it looks from the outside just based on results. A few players may make a difference in one or the other direction. So the team that this year is top next year can be middle and viceversa. So in your case, I would more look at comparing the coaches and their coaching style.

If both teams give equal playing time then it's a good idea to go to the best team and start in the middle and make your way up.

You need at least 30 minutes per game playing time. If the coach is reliable then you will have a lot of positive feedback from parents, however make sure you know before you go.
