Wow, that is a great phrase and you should share it with the subs on your sons team at the next practice. Tell his parents to "keep writing those checks" and their kid is a water boy. As I said, you learn life lessons everywhere, some are about people in general.

nope, i won't but i will think it as will the coach and the players who start and actually play will. my life lesson is that soccer is meant to be played not warm a bench for a "championship" team. or be a check writer to a cynical system. unfortunately in many instances you can work very hard and not make a whit of difference to a coach who has his starting 11 and his "subs". the lesson is find a team that you play...ALOT. so if you want to kill your kids love of soccer keep him on a team where he gets few minutes to play but ask him to practice endlessly. you will soon be having a chat about why he wants to quit at 13 or just play rec with his friends.....

Re: This is the select soccer experience??
to me the problem is the top/winning/championship team being the focus not the experience of playing. If a kid is unable to get enough playtime it is a sign that the level of play is too high (or other issues ) And in that case it is just better to go to a better suited enviornment rather than settling for the fact that "okay I may not play but look at all the stuff I won" or so the parents can say "my kid is on this top team or that one". And I will stand by my statement that any kid who sits a significant amount of time and is happy to be on the team and it doesn't burn him up, bother him, make him angry, put a chip on his shoulder is at least athletically a loser. Even a step further, if not being in the starting 11 in the position that you want doesn't bother you a little then you will never be there.

Re: This is the select soccer experience??
I can respect a kid that may not start but is working with other good players to get better and earn playing time much more than the parents who have made the "deals" with coaches about play time.
...And let's not forget the coach that still does subs by the watch! Now that's a frustration for those who belong out on the field but have to come off because Little Johnny needs his minutes, too.

That woould be interesting. So at U11 exactly what formation do you call it with 10 forwards and a keeper?

Re: This is the select soccer experience??
not everybody wants to play forward but if you do then you should be pushing to take the starting forwards spot. If someone is in the spot you want then he should be there because he is better at it than you. It should bother you, push you to work harder. BB used to absolutely hate playing forward. The only worse position would have been keeper. He has become used to it as he played more of it and now prefers it

that was some discussion
thanks to everyone for the feedback. i had no idea that this would have so many replies, views, and discussion directions.
We have plenty to think about with our starter. At least I think that I am getting a more complete picture of what select is. Wow was I naive when we started Academy
Whether it is select, PPL, or looking towards getting a real job instead; sure are more lessons he is learning here than just competing in a sport
