July 2 - Thoughts?

Now that July 1 has come and gone...

Are you happy with how your bb's team is shaping up? What about the reported shortage of goal keepers? Any surprises? Where did DC end up?

It's going to be a fun year!

So far i'm 2 for 3...2 bb's settled and love their team, one still up in the air - UGH, I hate this time of year!

Yes very, I have not seen many short keepers , yes but if I tell they won't be a surprise, DC is at TFC.

I hope everybody got to write their checks to the teams of their choice.

socmon3-- hope your 97 finds the perfect home. My friend's daughter just found her perfect spot, so don't panic yet!

And heck yes, when and where is happy hour?

There should be a set Soccer Try Out Happy Hour each year for all parents after the ink is dry. This is a stressful time of year.......

My 97 boy is set and my 93 boy is close but would like to add more to the roster. It seems like a weird year........just "feels" different. Can't put my finger on exactly what it is though..........

Economy maybe? Seems like a lot of boys not coming back this year for whatever reasons..

True. You are probably right. I have seen some D1 and D2 teams that are having a hard time filling their roster. Very unusual.......

Besides economy and kids choosing not to play, looks like too many teams and not enough players to fill the rosters.

Totally agree!

Middle school and other club sports, like lacrosse and football, lured away players on my son's former 97 team. The economy may be forcing most to be more discerning with their dollars; however, I'd say almost equal to that is the demand for time.

Any word on teams folding?

So here we are July 7th and still alot of teams with at least 2 openings - something else that's different from a year ago. Most teams had their rosters locked by July 4th back in 2008.

Don't know of any teams folding, however, I do know several teams that were a little nervous the first couple nights of tryouts last week. It does seem several teams are sitting at 14 or 15 and not the full 16 player roster as in past years. I'm sure economy, school sports, burnout, etc are all contributing factors.

Some coaches actually prefer a smaller roster - less substituting of their "core" players and usually a stronger bench.

Time will tell...just glad this past week is finally over - VERY stressful at our house for the first time in years!


PS - Thanks, Lauriete for the encouraging words...things finally did work out for my '97 and he is happy and settled for another year.

so glad to hear that things worked out. I do understand the stress involved!
I haven't heard of anyone folding either, but teams do have a little bit more time before they have to turn in their rosters. Our team is currently at 18- but socmom3 is right- alot of teams are at 15. That may actually be a good number as the players sure will see more playing time.
Anyone else want to chime in?

It does seem that teams are taking longer to form and that many are smaller than the max allowed. There's more than one D1 and D2 team looking for "the right guy."

Extra playing time is great - but only 10 or 11 available week after week for games isn't. Here's a shout out to the soccer gods that all those signing are committed.
