DA tryouts/evaluations Empty DA tryouts/evaluations

Post by Whatdoiknow1 4/11/2018, 7:59 pm

Can anyone provide information on how a non-DA club player (ie a current non-FCD, solar, Texans player) can be evaluated for a DA spot for one of those clubs? Is it through tryouts? If so, do you know when they will be held? And, do the three clubs stagger the tryouts so that you can tryout for each or do you have to choose one in advance and only attend one tryout? Thanks.

I am sure the big three have already reached out to the top 3-4 players they are interested in on their wish lists.  They will not stagger for your benefit.  Once state cup is over they usually start having more people out.  But I have to believe they have identified the ones they want and trying to get them out and to commit early off possible.  Remember they have 30+ kids in their programs they already know and have had a full season and tournaments to see who else they like in competition.

Thanks for the info. Not one player on our team has been “identified” and “invited out”. That’s a little troubling given they are top 10 in the classic D1 standings. Hard to believe not one player on the team is DA caliber since they need to fill about 130 slots now after expansion. I would think they would have some open practices and tryouts (especially if they are coming from one of the top ranked teams).

They will have kids out for larger tryouts, just later in May and June for invited pool training- the more open spots will be on the western teams for solar and Texans. And not sure a parent would share if they were invited out, would probably want to keep on the down low until after state cup when you can try out without a release.

As others have stated, go to tryouts after state cup. If no specific tryouts are posted look up the DA coach for the team you're interested in and give them a call. If you don't get a response go tryout for that age groups top team, that should give you a good chance of getting noticed.

I suggest reaching out to the DA contact for the club you are interested in tryouting for. In most cases if you wait until the official tryout dates you will be too late. Thye typically will have a few open spots possible then, but usually only because someone has dropped out that they didn't expect too. Best thing to do is reach out, ask about attending the DA practices for the clubs. They are usually very open to this and it is better then getting thrown into the mix of the open tryouts at the end of the season.

At the least, contact the DA folks (coaches, club director) and ask to come observe some practices. See what you will be possibly paying for. Also get a feel for the time commitment. minimum 3 practices a week and traveling every weekend sometimes for a single out of town game seems to wear folks down after the shiney newness wears off of the DA patch.

Panzerbug has some good advice. Expressing interest and getting your kid on the radar before the open pool training/tryout sessions is smart. And making sure you really know what you're getting into - time commitment, travel, cost - is good advice.

With the new U12 DA teams for Solar and Texans there will definitely be more opportunities.

I wouldn't expect them to be reaching out to every D1 team. The bar for outside recruiting is high. More along the lines of can the player have an impact on their top team? They can all fill their second teams with kids that have been playing D1 within the club.

wondering how the teams that lose a majority of kids to DA will fill their rosters? considering there is 20 teams in Classic 1 with about 14 per team- that is 280 of which almost a third will leave?

just-a-dad -- there will be a lot of movement going into the U12 and U13 years. U12 players will leave Classic in large numbers to go to DA and then return to Classic in decent numbers when U13 DA rosters shrink.

As DA opens up spots in 07 Classic, kids that want to move up will show up at tryouts. D1 will change a lot next year. Entire teams will be gone. Others will have a lot of new faces.

With the 06s, teams go from 26 slots plus DPs down to 18 plus DPs. Kids may move clubs to stay in the DA, but at least 24 will have to move back to Classic. Throw in kids from out of town that make U13 DA and the number heading back to Classic grows.

These are good opportunities for coaches to cooperate with each other and figure out a good solution, or to practice complete dysfunction and shoot themselves and the club in the foot! Wink

Definitley an opportunity to cooperate, half the kids going DA will be looking for another home after one year when it goes down to one team. Several classic league D1 teams are going to need new players this year, several will be looking for several players as they lose several to DA. If you are one of better kids on a D2 team you should look at the top solar, Texan and FCD teams that will lose all or most of players to DA. Or one of the smaller independents that will still have most of players intact and good coaches.

It will be interesting to see if Rebels, Allegiance, Rush, LP Owen will miss a couple of players or more, and if the big clubs come after their entire teams and coaches, or just several players.

Next several weeks will be interesting for sure.

Signing day is July 1st but typically you will know if your BB is rostered at least by June if you are outside the club. Those that are inside the club and the club wants to retain have typically already received a call from the DA coach and then filling the gaps starts now until July 1st. Granted with the additional clubs, i.e. Solar West and Texans South, that forms a whole new area of....I really don't know. I know Solar has been in discussions with other clubs and have already had a few kids out from other clubs to some of their general DA practices and they plan to start having general DA practices. So if your BB is not in a DA club I would reach out to the DA coach to get the low down and see about coming out to some of the general DA practices.

not sure on DA - just seems there are a lot of things that need to happen to finalize classic rosters. as a parent, you want your kid to be on a competitive team that doesn't lose half its roster at the last minute. seems these clubs and coaches don't give much info- even though we pay them thousands of dollars.

To answer the original question...what is the current landscape. Here is what I believe to be true based on personal knowledge and fairly believable rumors...

The three pre-existing "Clubs" will follow their establish routine of selecting 16ish from within the club and keep the remaining 8-10 spots for those outside the club. The 2 new "Clubs" (Solar West and Texans South) are likely more wide open.

FCD - DA leadership is familiar w/ the '07 group and hasn't needed to do any pool training to identify players within the club. Only a couple from outside of Gall's team will get an opportunity. Gall will coach and continue to have very involved assistants (Luccin et al).

Solar - DA leadership is still playing catch-up from the Andromeda merger and AP Split so they don't really know the '07 group. They started Pool Training in December and have gradually cut down the kids invited with Iber Cup being essentially a final tryout. Solar East will be coached by Adam Wells. He is finalizing his internal roster of 16 now. The roster will largely be made up of McKinney and Kennington kids with a few D2s as well (Martinez, Volkan, and Lanier). 8-10 spots will be up for grabs during the open tryouts. The coach for Solar West has not been named but the team will likely be based in the Keller area. Names still floating around the rumor mill are Oglesby and Martinez.

Texans- Much like FCD, they already have a pretty good handle on the '07 landscape and haven't done any pool training to date. Marcio is expected to be the coach and is very familiar with Stavrou's team as he coached almost all of them as U10's. There's lots of speculation as to how many kids from TXNs Red make it as they are talented, but play much more direct than Marcio prefers. My guess is that 3-4 max get the nod. Not much info to be had about TXN South although 1 decent rumor has them taking the entire Rebels roster.

It will be interesting to see whether Solar and Texans try to put a "top" team together or keep it split geographically??

To those independents that want to tryout at one or all of the DA clubs I advise the following:

1. Talk to your coach. Get his honest feedback as to whether your kid is ready and what club/coach may be the right fit. If your coach tries to talk you into staying saying that your kid is better off staying put you need to decide who he's looking out for...your kid or himself. Frankly anyone other than Pedro I'd feel like it was the latter. Ask your coach to reach out to prospective club on your behalf.

2. Reach out to club directly to express interest. They should get you in contact with the coach or at least a representative that is coordinating the tryouts.

3. Utilize your network. Unless you've been in NTX for less than a month, you are no more than 1 person removed from somebody at each club that has the inside scoop.

4. Ask for a practice release. This allows you to visit any practice (with permission from both clubs) before the official open period begins.

There is a lot of good advice here.

If you're "not sure on DA," I'd be asking a lot of questions over the next few weeks to try to figure that out. You don't want to be thinking 'why the hell did we do this?' a year from now!

What's the difference between playing for the A or B team? How does the competition each faces compare to other options? What are the differences between the clubs? What style do they play? How frequently do they train? How much have the boys developed? How good is the coaching? What does it cost? What is the plan for U13 when the roster shrinks? Does DA even make sense at U12? We could go on and on.... The point is U12 DA doesn't come in one size. You really want to understand what the goal is and whether it makes sense for your son.

One point I would make on the advice given above - Last year there were nowhere near 8 to 10 spots for kids outside the club. The range was 1 to 4. Clubs clearly favored kids from within (particularly for their b teams?). This year is a different age group and you have 48 new spots, so there could be a lot more.

Texans- Marcio knows the team well, will pretty much be current team and a few off of Texans Red like you mentioned. Texans have a system they play very well, but probably not the best place for the creative kids.

FC Dallas- top 7-8 on top team are very good but very thin behind from their other teams, being FC Dallas they will pick up more good players. Very athletic but seem to be missing something.

Solar- biggest wildcard, get they have four teams in D1-D2, some good teams but put up interesting results, probably the most number of kids within the club to look at.

Will be interesting to se who picks up some of the top four or five players out there we all know about and play for club outside of the above three.

Word on the street is that the Texans and Solar are working on a 15+ team switch that will take care of a lot of the DA questions being asked on this board and it will give one of the two a big presence in the southern part of the Metroplex......  that is all I can say at this point....

30+ teams and most if not all already know Sal and Gabe are coming over to Solar. I’ve already seen other Texan south coaches post their teams in other social media making the move as well. I don’t think Salazar is making the move so it would make sense that the opportunity for him to coach DA for Texans in the south (if he has the license) has now presented itself.
