Player Evaluations

Thinking about doing evaluations for my youth players this season. Any suggestions?

Every coach we've ever had says that they are doing them but somehow they never get done. It's really helpful for the kid to know what he's doing well and where you would like him to work. It's even more helpful for the parents, and guess what...for you! If the parents understand the positives and need to work on's that you are seeing in their son, then it's much easier for them to support you as a coach, have patience with you and their son, etc.

I think that kind of thing is best done informally, relatively frequently, and in small doses.

How much time do you want to spend on it? You can start at the beginning of the season and evaluate each kid and the team and define objectives for the season. At x-mas you make an evaluation and at the end of the year another one and compare it. It will not only give the players/parents a peice of mind it also shows you what to work on more in the future. But again this is extreme and I haven't seen too many coaches doing it.
