Suggestions for the site
I am a long time Turf user. I struggled with the change along with everyone else. I would love to see this new site take off since it is much more straight forward than new Turf.
I have one suggestion which would apply to both sites. Scrolling messages went out of style on the web about 10 years ago yet you have 2 scrolls a horizontal and vertical. This is very distracting and tends to draw the users eyes up and away instead of toward the content.
In my opinion, a better UI for the latest topics would be a scrollable region showing the latest x posts ordered from most recent to least recent. As far as the horizontal scrollable region at the top, I have no suggestions. That's just plain annoying.
I am a software developer and I work on Web Sites so I have some experience with Web UIs but take it for what it's worth.

Re: Suggestions for the site
I agree the scrollin stuff is somewhat distracting. What I found while using the girls site was...once the user is down past the first thread, the scrolling is no longer visable and no longer distracting.
BUT...I did make a couple of changes that we can try...1) announcements across top of page will only appear on the home page, not every page. 2) I locked the "Latest Topics" and increased the height size of the module box to encompass the Top 8 latest threads.
Hope that helps...Admin

Re: Suggestions for the site
I'd second getting rid of the scroll.
Also, might be that my vision isn't great, but I have a hard time distinguishing between bold for udpated topics and regular for non-updated ones.
