I see that U14, U15, and U17 all value D3 greater than D2. Why? scratch

Just a screw up in the points system on gotsoccer.

Look at this:
2010/2011 U15 D1 Winner got 7500 points.
2011/2012 U15 D1 Winner got 3875 points.

They've got some really screwy stuff going on with their ranking system.

FCD Premier got 7000 points for winning U14 last year... if they win U15 this year, they only get 3875.

Crazy.

You got me thinking. I did a quick check of the 99s. In both D1 and D2, the second place team got more points than the first place team.

99s D1
1st Solar Red - 5036 points
2nd Dallas Texans - 5416 points
99s D2
1st Wizards - 2097 points
2nd Liverpool - 2313 points

Maybe it's harder to finish in second than in first. Rolling Eyes

Gotsoccer rankings are a joke. Gotsoccer can be useful to look at the game history and look for common opponents to guage a team's strength, thats about it. Look at the 96 CL points

Champion DTR 202
2nd TFC 1091
3rd DTRS 791
4th ODY 580
5th FCD 379
6th DTW 238
7th Solar 147

You can go win a rinky-dink tournament and earn more points than winninng one of the top leagues in the country. Question Question Question

You can go win a rinky-dink tournament and earn more points than winninng one of the top leagues in the country. Question Question Question

If you've never done it, it's worth reading the description of how the rankings/points are compiled as most don't seem to have a clue how its done.

By no means a full example but in short, tournaments (and some leagues) are awarded a total point value based upon the strength of the teams playing in that tournament/league. Teams are then awarded a fraction of the total available points based upon their finish in the tournament league. The points awarded are then reduced by 20% of that team's current point total. This eliminates the ability of a highly ranked team, entering a lower tier tournament against subpar opponents in an effort to garner points.

This is why you see examples such as illustrated by some above (2nd place teams earning more points than first place teams). It's because relative to their current point total, the 2nd place team performed better than expected while the first place team likely performed as expected.

As some have stated, the local rankings are decent, not perfect, but nothing is. National rankings are another story but I'm not sure how anyone could come up with a credible way to rank two teams that have no opponents in common and might not even have played any teams that themselves had any opponents in common.

Based on the above, you can quickly see why 96 CL D1's point total for this past season dropped so much. The old Solar 96 (not the team that played as Solar Chelsea this past season which was previously known as Solar 96 Red) dropped out and became one of Solar's DA squads (for the most part). Losing such a highly ranked team from the league greatly impacted the overall strength of the league last year. And this coming year, point totals are likely to be lower again as Andromeda (a team that started last season with a substantial point total has now dropped substantially in the rankings and was relegated) DTR and FCD Premier each have lower point totals today than they did at this point last year (though each to varying degrees).

As such, DTR's very low point take from 96 CL D1 last season is due to their high point total relative to the leagues relative strength when the season started last year. D1 had a value of 1750 points, DTR started the season with 7738 points, as such the most they could earn for winning the league was 1750 less 20% of 7738, or 208 points, which is what they were awarded.

Conversely, TFC, finishing in 2nd place received 1091 points. Again, the league had a point total of 1750, for 2nd place, TFC would have been eligible to receive, at most, 1750 less 20% of 1475 (their point total when the season started), or 1455 points. They finished 2nd and were awarded 1091 points (or 75% of total possible points available to them).

You might not like the ranking methodology and the way points are awarded but it isn't voodoo and 5 minutes of research would explain exactly how points are awarded.

Well of course there is a formula for it. The formula as stated is basically the better you have been in the past the less points we will give you now. I dont care how they try to justify it there is no way placers should get higher rewards than winners. They are fun to look at but gotssoccer rankings are irrelevant. Anyone really think Solar 97 is the best 96 team in NTX? Razz
