Re: Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football
What have they done?? The are probably the most followed college program in the country. They secured a national TV contract that most 10-12 team conferences would die for! They graduate their players and with possibly the exception of this year, play one of the hardest schedules in the country year in and year out. Oh, and they aren't too shabby on the pitch either!! Go Irish!

I think you'd have to discuss the 'deserved' part with NBC as they paid billions of dollars for the exclusive right to broadcast the Irish games. Ever hear of the Cubs? Some teams have a huge following despite their prowess (I can think of a local team with a star on their helmets that have a similar situation).
I'm a huge college football fan, not just specific teams, so I genuinely appreciate the tradition and enjoy it when the historically good teams do well and when they are occassionally knocked off. I would consider myself an Irish fan, but thought it was great that Navy won the last game, very exciting.

More importantly what have they done in the last 30 years? Yes they have one MNC but so does BYU and Clemson.
ND has a 65% winning percentage during that time span.
Also keep in mind that ND was not NBC's first choice for their Saturday broadcasts. NBC's stipulation was that the school they were going to exclusively broadcast not be affiliated with any conference, schools get more from their TV conference distribution than ND gets from NBC.

Bagman, I don't have any stats to back this up, but the Big Ten and the Big East have been courting ND for years to get them to join their conferences. The main reason that ND stays independent in football is because they make more money on their own. Of course, ND has joined the Big East in non-football sports. That is due to ease in scheduling and the lack of money in the less profitable sports. Why is it easy for ND football to fill out their schedule? The other school gets a nice payday, they play a school with a storied history and you might argue that they have a decent chance of a victory. It pains me to say that, but it's kind of been that way for the last several years.

Harp, it pains me to admit that you make a valid point. The ND soccer program, both men and women, has been far superior to anything we've seen lately on the gridiron-and several local (DFW) kids on the squads-particularly on the women's side. Dillon Powers on the men's side.
Took the family down to San Antone for the Washington State game and thought we'd turned the corner. Then we lay an egg against Navy, but it is difficult, if not impossible, to root against any of the service acadamies given the sacrifices they make for us and our freedom.

really? ND football hasn't been significant since they were wearing leather helmets. They do have a loyal following though.
