Food for thought!
What are your feelings about a 97 boys coach allowing a 98 classic player, that is in the 97 ODP pool, guest play for his team? Please be blunt!

No big deal. Remember that ODP is calendar year not the "soccer" birth year. Why?

If you already have heard many different views, do you really expect to get a much broader view?prohibit wrote:ontheway wrote:No big deal. Remember that ODP is calendar year not the "soccer" birth year. Why?

I define many as about 5 or so, and that of parents. I wanted to hear from coaches, managers, players, and different parents from all areas, not being just limited to one area.

Re: Food for thought!
OK from a competitive position, but a little dangerous for the 98 unless he is pretty big. There can be a 6 inch growth spurt between 6th and 7th grade so he may be up against some very large boys.

I don't see the big deal as long as he is good enough to play with the team. 97,98,99 it really shouldn't matter

Who cares? He's not taking a spot that wouldn't have been up for grabs anyway, right? After U10, it's all fair game. The better players make the team and the best start/play.
You can't say it's not fair - that went out when you stopped playing recreation.

Re: Food for thought!
At the select level, if you are second guessing your coach, then you should probably look for a different one. With both of my son's coaches I trust EVERY thing that they do with regards to soccer. They know what they are doing. Even if the coach replaced my son, I would just find another team. It wouldn't make me angry. That's how much I trust their level of expertise.

Re: Food for thought!
My son is a 98classic league player and has guest played for a 97 D1 team at tournaments. Same coach for both teams. Usually this is done when he has an injured player. Don't see what the big deal is. Gotta trust the coach on this one. He wouldn't ask if he thought it would hurt the team. Sure there is a size difference usually at this age but generally a good experience. I say go for it.

NO! Don't do it! It will destroy both the boy and the team, and the coach. And you. Hope that broadens the answer pool a little.

A 98 already playing against some of the top 97s in ODP guest playing 97. What problem do you see. I see no red flags at all. It will be good for the player as long as he is not playing down with lower compitition (ie a ringer) where he may be subject to cheap shots for burning bigger less skilled players.

As long as it is not taking playing time away from my son, I don't see any issues with it.

Re: Food for thought!
This is no different than middle school soccer. An older 98 boy in 7th grade would play with/against some 96s from 8th grade where schools combine the 7th/8th grade teams. I think it great for the 98 to play against bigger, faster players.

Re: Food for thought!
My son has played up and I think it was the best thing I could have done for him. You can't get better if you are not pushed and get the opportunity to go against bigger and faster and more physical kids. I don't think it's for everyone but if he is an above average player and not being challenged enough on his current team and you feel he can handle it I say go for it and best of luck.yellow-card wrote:This is no different than middle school soccer. I would just echo the concern of soccer taxi. Some of these U13 boys have hit a growth spurt with a vengeance. Tall, filled out, or both, and not someone you want plowing into your BB if he hasn't quite gotten to that point.

So Eagle, what if time was taken from your son? What happens then?

Well if time was taken from my son by a 98 I think he would just want to work harder to become better than the kid. The kid will get his playing time fair and square, and he will push the older kids if he is good enough, thus making everybody better.

Kids play up all the time. Middle school combines 7th and 8th grade. If the kid can play, no big deal IMO.

Re: Food for thought!
Middle School Soccer? What is that--LOL. We lost our program last year once the ISD Athletic Director's child went into high school. Did I mention he used to be a great soccer coach in town prior to taking the suit and tie job! Funny how quick the program ended once his child moved on.RytMid wrote:Kids play up all the time. Exactly...
A 98 that can compete with the 97s should be playing up. Hell, if he can compete with the 96s, then he should be there. If there's an injustice, it's holding back a player just so he can be the best in an age group. Of course, try to get his 98 coach to agree to that. Unless, of course, he also coaches the 97s.

Re: Food for thought!
A U11B team was disqualified this weekend for having three older players signed up in the Spring Bash Tournament. The officials need to do more of this, what a disgrace! The Tigres had one 97 play against our 00 in the last Tournament of the Champions.
