Scenario 3: US Soccer parts ways with Bob Bradley (either by letting him
go or Bradley resigning) and hires a big name coach with international
renown.
This scenario has some strong merit to it and will be the one that
appeases hardcore US Soccer fans. Its no doubt that those entrenched in
soccer in America have long waited for a US national team coach with
international clout. The reasons for their desire are numerous: a big
name coach brings respect to the program, a big name coach has become a
big name because of his skill and therefore would bring out the best in
the players available, insecurity plays a big role in this too as a big
name coach helps fans feel like their team is more important, both at
home and abroad.
US Soccer has wanted one of these big names for some time now. The
widely publicized courtship of Jurgen Klinsmann in 2006 proves that
point. Of course, as Ive said before, courting a big name and actually
landing one are two completely different tasks as the abrupt end to the
Klinsmann talks illustrates.
