I think you are asking what is the first year the can tryout. I think ODP is on a calendar year and this year will be anyone born in 1999 can try out. But as mentioned North Texas Soccer has all the information on this.

Tryouts for '97 and '98 players are only for players that have never attended a tryout before, so if you tried out last year or the year before and didn't make it, you can't try out again - is my understanding.

'99 birth year players will try out in November, December and January - no dates listed yet.

That is INCORRECT. The ODP coaches explain during tryouts that if you don't make it this time to continue coming back each Spring/Fall.
Players develop over time. A kid may just be an average player at U12 but with good coaching and hard work, he can become a great player at U16 or sooner.
There is no limit to the number of times you can tryout.
Once you have been accepted into the ODP pool, you no longer have to tryout in the future as long as you continue to pay the ODP fee.

"97B" means kids born any time in the Calendar year 1997, right? And so on?

The years are birth year not NTX soccer year.
What a player can get out of it is exposure to different coaching, formations and tactics. They practice with very high quality of players. I am a firm believer that the camp experience is unique. 5 days of games against the best from the 13 region III states at the UAB campus.
What they look for is superior first touch, solid tactical play and comfortable in a very fast paced game environment.

Thanks all for the info.....So just to clarify, my son is a 99 but born in 98,
so he would be a 98 as they go by year born correct....

Correct. Don't get discouraged thinking that they only pick the "older" players...if skilled enough, the younger players have just as much of a shot at getting chosen as the older ones.

How does it affect play/time with your current club? Also, are all coaches o.k. with the kid playing 0dp. What are the costs?

We missed a couple of their training sessions due to tournament play in the spring, but they'll tell you that Club comes first.

I'm sure that the coaches have varying opinions. Ours thinks it's a great opportunity for him, and more quality touches on the ball.

Cost for the fall just went up from $85 to $100 and you pay that again in the spring. Camp is around $1,000.

It's relatively inexpensive when you see what you get out of it. I know many people who pay $20 for practice sessions at Sole Roll on weekends. Their dads have to work the phone to get enough players to show up for quality sessions. ODP gathers the quality players for you, gives you a nice outdoor field, and top coaches to train you. You don't have to pick up the phone to call up everyone for a nice scrimmage, it's done for you! You don't have to attend the camps if you don't want to, so I'm guessing the cost is about less than $200 per year. Exposure to different coaches and extra playing time among quality players never hurt anyone. Bb always looks forward to his ODP sessions and seeing all his friends from different teams.
Btw, your bb can try out even if they're an 00 this year, if they have the coach's recommendation.

that's not true....there are open tryouts each year.

Right you are wareagle. They just added 40 plus new kids to the 98 pool. While my bb wasn't thrilled when he showed up and there were 40 new faces, it's great for those that already made it because nothing is secure until you get picked for regional play or camp. If they really want it, they have to keep working hard.

That deadline is for 99 tryouts only. 97s and 98s have already completed their open tryouts. The original poster said his bb was born in 1998 so, if he didn't go, it's too late this year.

I'm not sure but the pool is now well over 100 names. I guess a lot who didn't bother last time or didn't make it. It always seemed to me like there were a lot of 99 bbs who made the 98 pool so I guess the 98s came out in force this time. It was so freakin cold last time, I don't think anyone did anything to hurt or help their position in the pool.
