TRYOUTS !! - formality or necessity ?

It's that time of year AGAIN...parents sign a year away, saving accounts are tapped, kids get a new wardrobe, Nike and the others get rich, most coaches can relax, and I can finally go on vacation...or maybe not.

Are TRYOUTS a thing of the past? If your team is not set now, you may be in trouble. Coaches should already have commitments and contracts ready for signatures. Tryouts, for most, are just the day we sign, pay, and order kits.

For a smart coach, "tryouts" for this year started on July 2nd of last year. By the end of the April season, parents who planned to move on should have already have been looking and ready for June 1st.

SO..hope everyone made good decisions for you and your kiddos. Another exciting year of SOCCER is ahead of us!!

Unless you have a player leaving 2 days before try-outs and need to replace him.

Not sure about that - I think there is still a place for true "tryouts" at some clubs. I think many teams have a couple of spots that are being competed for (meaning more prospects than open spots, and coach hasn't made final decision yet).

Also tryouts allow those who are cut or change their minds during day 1 to find another team to hook up with. In general I would say they still serve an important purpose at some places at least.

My vote is necessity. Yes, many of the rosters are set, but others have a spot available for whatever reason. My bet is there are a few quality players still undecided.

July 1 requires parents, players, and coaches to officially declare their intentions to the team. Although surely some of the stories of being cut on June 30 are just urban legend ... right?
