High School - School Change
If my son changed HS for his senior year thru open enrollment, could he still play varsity soccer?
Not sure what the UIL rules are.

Re: High School - School Change
Our HS offers open enrollment and they stated that open enrollment transfers are not eligible to play varsity sports for 1 year per UIL rules, unless they recieve a waiver from UIL. I have no idea what is involved with getting such a waiver.

Re the waiver, just tell them you were looking for a better soccer team. That should do it.Dropball wrote:Our HS offers open enrollment and they stated that open enrollment transfers are not eligible to play varsity sports for 1 year per UIL rules, unless they recieve a waiver from UIL. The waiver is dependent on whether the previous school will sign off on the transfer which most, for reasons I do not understand, will not.

Re: High School - School Change
If waivers were easy to get, kids parents would be having them run to the big name program schools all the time. I recall a couple years(?) ago Southlake Carroll needed a good QB and a kid from I think Oklahoma or somewhere tried to enroll after his parents got a residence in the district. I heard about a basketball coach out in El Paso the other day who was finding players in Mexico and lining up residences for them in his district. Kids would be moving around like they do in club soccer in June if the waivers were easy. Soccer isn't football or basketball yet, but the principle is the same.

Re: High School - School Change
He can play JV but not varsity. Chances of getting a waiver are between slim and none, and slim just left town. Sounds unfair but unfortunately the UIL has to stick to it's guns on this, otherwise Texas HS sports (especially football) would turn into a recruiting free-for-all.turf-a-lot wrote:If my son changed HS for his senior year thru open enrollment, could he still play varsity soccer?

Thanks for the feedback. Son was not wanting to change for the soccer program. I thought there were some UIL rules that would apply. Thinking he will just finish up where he is now. We will see.

It doesn't state anything about not being able to play.

Re: High School - School Change
Does the rule apply for a same school district transfer? Sometimes it is actually for the academics.Dropball wrote:Our HS offers open enrollment and they stated that open enrollment transfers are not eligible to play varsity sports for 1 year per UIL rules, unless they recieve a waiver from UIL. Re: High School - School Change
I agree with the posts above.....awfully hard to get UIL to grant a waiver. Our keeper moved to NM because his parents were transferred there. This was the during the end of his junior year. He enrolled in school in NM and attended classes for about a month before his parents company relocated them back here. They moved into the same house they left about 4 months earlier. UIL would not grant him a waiver to play his senior year because he had already enrolled, and attended classes in NM.
The system sucks and does not allow for special circumstances.

He will not be eligible for Varsity. If you transfer (do not live in the district), you are only eligible for JV until you have "established" residencey for 1 full year. The schoole where I work offers open enrollment (there are requirements), and we have a lot of kids who want to come here for sports. When they find out they aren't eligible for Varsity they usually decide to stay where they were.

Re: High School - School Change
The district where my BB played, that has school choice, does not allow seniors on the JV team.
Unfortunately, choices have consequences, fair or not.
Good luck.
